17 April, 2019, JOHANNESBURG – NPI Governance Consulting, in partnership with leading independent management consulting firm IQbusiness, is proud to release the “25 Years of Nation Building to Transformation” report, in celebration of 25 years of transformation in South Africa. The document is a qualitative research project which details the successes of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), along with other transformation policies implemented over the last few years.
The report unpacks the different stages of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), from the dawn of democracy in 1994 through the introduction of the Constitution in 1996 to the signing of the BBBEE Act in 2003 and other transformation policies.
Launching the “25 Years of Nation Building to Transformation” report at the 2019 Top Empowerment Conference, NPI Governance Consulting CEO Israel Noko acknowledged that the report was intended to highlight positive stories about transformation to counter the negative narrative driven by stakeholders with contrasting views.
”
We want to change our negative narrative and celebrate our progress…we must acknowledge that we can do better. Our problems are real, but soluble…our economy has true potential.
Says Noko
Successes include South Africa increasing its GDP by two-and-a-half times since the beginning of democracy and the country ranking high on the ratio of female representatives in positions of power – both in public office and in the private sector. In addition, South Africa remains an aspirational democracy, one that other African countries look to for lessons learned and best practices around Black Economic Empowerment.
The report also identifies individuals and organisations to emulate as role models of transformation.
”
We are all familiar with our historical pioneers of freedom and equality such as Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo among many others. But this report goes further and identifies new and unsung protagonists of transformation and categorises them as “Modern-Day Heavyweights”, “Early Adopters” and “Upcoming transformation inspirationalists.
Says Noko
Though we’ve come a long way a s a nation, the report also recognises that there are institutional challenges that require a great level of engagement from all stakeholders and calls on government and the private sector to address these challenges and contribute towards driving a positive transformation narrative.
